“I had already decided that I wanted to wear a saree for my maternity photographs. For me, this was not just another outfit. I wanted something that felt Indian and elegant, but I also did not want the photographs to look like a typical family-function album. I wanted them to have a more refined, almost editorial feel.

During the planning, the team helped us think about the saree, jewellery, makeup and the overall lighting together. That was useful because I initially thought the saree itself would be the main thing, but I realised during the shoot how much the light and way the pallu was arranged changed the photograph. They made small adjustments instead of repeatedly changing the entire setup.

My husband was supposed to be in only a few photographs, but he ended up being part of much more of the session because the couple photographs felt very natural. I especially liked the photographs where he was not looking at the camera. Those were much more emotional for us because they captured the relationship rather than just showing two people posing together.

I was also pleasantly surprised by how different the final photographs looked from each other. We had traditional portraits, some softer couple photographs and a few more dramatic frames. Nothing felt over-edited or like a completely different version of me.

“We initially thought of doing a simple studio maternity shoot, but both of us wanted something with more space and natural surroundings. After discussing it with Impresio, we decided on an outdoor-style maternity session. I was excited about the photographs but also slightly worried because outdoor shoots during pregnancy can sound much easier than they actually are.

The planning was what made me comfortable. We discussed the timing, outfits and the amount of movement before the shoot. I remember telling them that I did not want to spend the whole session walking around just to get different backgrounds. That concern was taken seriously. We also included some family photographs, and those have become particularly special because this was the last time it was just the three of us before the baby arrived.
